Kitchen remodeling, planning your garden design?

Learn designers' secrets and strategies

Kitchen remodelling, has assumed a new importance in our lives. Our lifestyles are changing.  'Architects must evolve to survive' said Azim Nanji in Architecture for a Changing World. So must our architecture.  Our homes and garden areas need to adapt to meet our needs.

So you want to adapt your home? I will show you how to look objectively at your house and garden. Indoors and outdoors, I will teach you how to analyze your home plans, quickly and easily. Checklists and detailed descriptions focus your mind on how you can adapt your interior or garden design to best meet your needs.

Whether you need advice on kitchen designs, gardens for children, bathroom remodelling, home offices, water features for your garden, bedroom ideas, outdoor living space, the focus is on you. You know your lifestyle, personal habits, delights and dislikes better than any consultant designer/architect/color consultant. How best to create comfortable harmony concepts between ourselves, our belongings and the space around us is shown in detail here.

Fashion trends come and go. For example, it has been fashionable to design homes without full working kitchens as people embraced the dine-out trend. With the new designer nests of today, featuring your home as a sanctuary, the kitchen is again the hub of the home. With kitchen remodelling being the fastest growing interior design activity in the US today, other areas of the home need to be reassessed also. Dining has come full circle from the continuing boom in dining out to the revival of the home kitchen. Casual dining rooms and a decrease in formal living rooms are popular features of today's busy lifestyles.

People spend millions of dollars and hours of their time in designer home stores; hoping that some new accessories will turn their homes into a refuge where they can relax and recharge after a busy day. What they really need is to understand their personal design requirements. Only then will they be able to truly solve their problems and get the most out of life, regardless of the fashion.

The Smart Design Guide gives you the answers. It shows you how to look at your needs and solve your design problems.

The following is an excerpt from the Guide's checklist on Kitchen Remodelling :-

Key questions to consider

  1. What are you going to do in your kitchen?Knowing what you will use the area for will help determine the house floor plan; not only how big the kitchen needs to be but also where should lie in relation to other rooms in the house.
  2. How many people will be working in the kitchen? If you and your partner both love to cook, make sure there's room for both of you to work without getting in each other's way. Similarly, if children need to be able to help themselves to drinks and snacks, make sure that the fridge and a work top are easily available to them, out of the way of the main preparation area.
  3. Do you have sufficient bench or counter space to prepare food and to serve up meals for the household plus guests?
  4. Which appliances do you need, own now, plan to use in the future? While gadgets are fun and can be very useful, unless you use them on a regular basis and have the room to store them, they can quickly become a major headache.
  5. Does the room receive good natural light? A dark, dull kitchen will do nothing to inspire your appetite in the morning. Is the artificial light adequate over the work areas? Low light causes many accidents with knives in the kitchen.
  6. What impact will a kitchen upgrade have on the value of the property? Kitchen and bathrooms, along with gardens, are generally the features that help sell a home. Beware of over capitalizing if you do not plan to stay in the home for long.
  7. What is your budget? Kitchens can absorb an enormous amount of money if you let them. Be realistic when deciding how much you can afford to spend.

Kitchens that are pleasant to be in, work efficiently, and relate well to the rest of your home and your lifestyle by obviously meeting your needs will add enormous value to your home and your life. Make sure your foremost needs are met with a well-designed kitchen...."
